Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) in Rome

Automated Teller Machines (ATMs), known as bancomat in Italy, are widely available throughout Rome, and most Visa and MasterCard affiliated cards are accepted.  Several things to note before using the bancomat:

1.  Before inserting your card, make sure the logo displayed on the machine matches the one displayed on the back of your card to ensure compatibility (cirrus, plus, etc.).

2.  When withdrawing money, you will be prompted to enter a four-digit pin code.  If your current pin code is not four digits, be sure to have this changed by your local bank before traveling.

3.  The daily limit for cash withdrawal at a bancomat is €250.  If you have a higher daily limit established with your local bank, while in Italy you will need to withdraw money from different ATMs affiliated with different banks, as one machine will not be able to honor your withdrawal request if it exceeds €250 daily.

4.  It is important to remember that every time you make a withdrawal you will be charged a transaction fee.  You will need to check with your own bank to learn the current fees, as they vary by financial institution.
